Personally I love the rain, the sound of the raindrops hitting the roof, the fresh smell in the air and the fact that you don't really have to wash your car all that often. Though I think a lot of other Washingtonians also find the rain comforting, it can quickly wear on us. It's hard not to feel down and gloomy when you literally have a dark cloud over your head almost every day. Thankfully we have more control over the weather than we think.. No, we can't actually part the thick grey clouds but we can find ways to bring a little sunshine into our lives.

Tired of feeling tired? First things first, go to the store and buy a bottle of vitamin D. We usually get our dose of vitamin D from the sun hitting our skin but that can be very limited in the winter months. So remember to take your vitamins every morning (unless of course your doctor says otherwise) and your body will love you for it.

My favorite part of spring and summer is seeing all of the beautiful plants and flowers in bloom. It is well known that being around plants has a very calming affect on us. Seeing the beautiful colors, smelling the floral scents and especially getting our hands in the soil can be very beneficial to uplifting our moods. There's a few different ways you can incorporate more plants into your life. First, try buying a tropical house plant. I am a plant hoarder, I have at least three plants in every room in my house and it makes my home feel like an oasis. Next, pay a visit to a plant conservatory. Visiting the W.W. Seymour Conservatory in Wrights Park is a perfect way to spend a cloudy afternoon. Walking through this place makes you feel like you are on a mini vacation. The conservatory is filled with beautiful tropical plants and it's warm, win win!

If plants aren't your thing, there are other ways to combat the winter weather in your home. A very easy thing you can do is to simply open up those curtains and let the light in! Start a morning ritual of pulling open all the shades, slicing open a fresh orange and reading your newspaper by the window. The scent of the citrus mixed with the bright natural light will surely start you off to a great day!

The summer months will be here in no time but for now, try one or all of these methods and hopefully you will feel like nothing can rain on your day. And if all else fails, pack a bag and take damn vacation... you deserve it!

The message is you're not good enough as is. Well I say "FUCK THAT"! When are we ok, just as we are, when is good enough good enough.... Well your good enough when you start to love yourself exactly as you are, right now in this very moment. Not when your thinner, fitter, more organized, funnier, quieter, smarter, less goofy, better dressed or what ever negative self talk is screaming in your ear and preventing you from living a fuller life. Is your goal is to wear a bikini to the beach.... Well this is how you do, put on a damn bikini and go to the beach.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying don't have goals, dreams, visions. I am a huge dreamer, you can't achieve anything without the dream first. You want to be fit, strong and healthy, HELL YES, you should. But not at the cost that you stop living NOW. Don't give up and throw in the towel, but love yourself now too. Because if you don't I promise you you wont when you hit the "Goal" either. You will still be striving for some new goal, never being content. You will never feel like you have arrived. I know this to be a fact.

How do I know this.... Well I am turning 50!!!! (on Valentine's Day). And I have picked up a tiny amount of wisdom (believe it or not). Remember when you were in High School, or in your 20's or whenever and you thought you were fat and worried about your appearance... Then you looked back at photo's from that time period and realized you actually looked amazing, you wish you could look that amazing now. So what I am saying is you (we) wasted all that time worrying and not truly enjoying our lives. I can bet you anything the same thing is true for the future. In 5+ years when you look back at you RIGHT NOW, you will be shocked at how amazing you were. So stop hating yourself right now and enjoy this moment before you look back and wish you had. And if you are 20 something right now, rock that shit, celebrate your youth, be free, be adventurous, live in the moment. You are beautiful, we all are!! I don't care if you are 20 or 82 you are amazing just how you are, so start living and loving yourself.

I am personally excited to become 50 next month, as we age, we become more of who we were meant to be. I feel more comfortable in my own skin now than I ever have (and there is more of it). I intend to be healthy, eat real food, and exercise so I can keep on exploring this glorious world of ours. But when I want to eat cake, I am gonna eat the damn cake and enjoy every last bite (and with wine).

Here's to 2018 live large, be free and explore your world in other words, Seize the Day!!

Next... Christy moving beyond the massage room

Hello, as most of you know I retired from massage in July. It was a very hard decision for me, massaging is a huge part of me, I love and miss it. Sadly the recommendation came from my spinal surgeon and I had to do what was best for my overall health. Most of my dear clients have been with me well over a decade. Everyone was so kind and understanding but it was sad saying goodbye to being your therapist. Thank you so much for all your support over years, you all have meant so much to me. I also thank you for trusting me enough to continue to support the business I love and worked so hard to build. It has been a transition for all of us.

Walking out of the massage room left me to wonder "who am I now and what do I do". I would say I am running my business but I really always did. I have gotten a chance to see most of you, as I spent the first few months behind the desk. I really enjoy helping all the clients and giving them excellent customer service. This extra time has also allowed me to spend more time training staff and checking in on everything.

Christy with 3 of her 4 Grandchildren
But what I really wanted to do was find a way to be a bigger part of my community and to support our neighbors. I decided I could do more for Carpe Diem Massage being out in the community than being behind the desk. I spent a lot of time thinking about how I was going to do this. I decided to find a cause that I really believed in and get involved. This lead me to talk to a friend, who is on Stadium District board of directors with me, she works for Mulicare. At the time I had no idea what she did, turns out she was the exact person I needed to talk to, she is in charge of fund raising. I wanted to give something to Mary Bridge to support our neighbors in crisis. But I wanted to support a very focused group of children. Those who suffer from the effects of childhood sexual abuse. So I decided to do a fund raising event for Mary Bridge's Children's Abuse Intervention Department (CAID). The reason this cause is very near and dear to my heart is because I was one of those kids. I have always felt I came out stronger than most in my situation and I wanted to give back. So this project is what I have be focusing my energy on. We will be donation 40% of all massages given on November 18th and 19th directly to CAID.

This will be my first of many causes I want to give Carpe Diem Massages attention to. This is the direction I am being lead. I am very excited to be putting my energy into something so fulfilling and creating a spirt of giving and community at Carpe Diem Massage.

In closing, I want to thank each and every client who has ever been on my massage table, It was an honor and a please to take care of you.

Love,

Christy

Being a mom is hard! Raising tiny humans into well behaved members of society is not for the faint hearted. But before we get into that, let me introduce myself, and my little mini-me's.

Hello! My name is Sarah Tolley and I am 26 years old. I am the daughter of Christy Barnes (The owner of an amazing massage place called Carpe Diem Massage), I manage Carpe Diem, go to massage school, and I have two little ones of my own. Emilie (age 5) and Aubrey (Age 2). I am also happily married to a wonderful man named Joe.

Now that that is out of the way- I want to talk a bit about being a mom. I have received more advice (mostly unsolicited) than I know what to do with, so I strive not to do that to other moms. However the best thing I have ever been told since I became a mom is "It is OK to put yourself first." It took a few years for that advice to sink in- but lets think about that for a minute.

As mothers, we hold ourselves to the most ridiculous standards. We have higher expectations of ourselves- than we have for anyone else on the planet... and our expectations for ourselves are higher than anyone else would expect from us. Why do we put that pressure on ourselves? I call it "Mom guilt" If you stay at home you feel bad for "Not contributing" but if you go to work you also feel bad for missing out on every second of your child's lives. We as moms never let ourselves win. We rarely take the time for ourselves that we need and deserve- and when we do spend that time for ourselves, we end up mostly talking about our kids to anyone around. It is so easy for us to completely forget who we were before children. What did you enjoy doing? What were your hobbies? What was your favorite way to relax and unwind? Its important to reconnect with your inner self- trust me on this one.

Try to think of it like this.. If you have a cup, and it is completely empty, how can you pour any into the cups of those who need you the most? I like to think of my cup being full of energy. Often- after school, work, and being a mom and wife, it feels like my cup is on empty- and everyone around me notices. If I don't take the time to refuel myself (I will share some great ways to do so) then those I love and care about notice that I have less patience, I am cranky, complain, and I am stuck in what I like to call a "mom rut" every other aspect of your life suffers! So what am I trying to say? I believe taking time for yourself makes you a better mom! A better wife! A better employee! A better student! I am giving you permission. Go ahead- try it. I promise it will be OK. You wouldn't expect anyone else to work as hard as you do!

Taking "You time" doesn't have to be a huge production. For myself I try to plan for a pedicure, trip to the spa, girls night with some friends, or a massage every 2 months or so. But I take a little time for myself everyday. Waking up before your family and getting in a workout or just a quiet cup of coffee can do wonders. Taking a detox bath (Epsom Salt, baking soda, table salt and a few drops of lavender) after your kids are in bed is heavenly! My new favorite is having a glass of wine and coloring in my own grown up coloring book while the girls make their own masterpieces. There is something about doing something that is just for you- that can get you through any tough day.

Mothers are extraordinary creatures. If you are a new mom, old mom, or somewhere in between: You are enough. You are amazing. You are doing the best that you can. And you are incredibly loved. Stay calm, and Mommy on!

This is like a whole other world in here!" or, "I feel like I have traveled back into time." Well, we feel the same way. This blog is about the feel of our space, and most importantly the history of our building, the Henry Drum House. Without understanding the importance of the history that took place inside these walls, we cannot fully appreciate the beauty that has become Carpe Diem Massage. Take a peek with us down the rabbit hole, and get a glimpse of the past.

The Henry Drum House was built in 1888, for none less than Henry Drum himself. Mr. Drum made an impressive contribution to the development of early Tacoma. He was a business man, and a civic leader. He was elected Mayor of Tacoma. Henry was Tacoma's 5th mayor (if the mayors who were elected after the consolidation of Old and New Tacoma in 1884 are considered) but if the Mayors of New Tacoma are also included, then Henry Drum would be considered the 7th Mayor! Mr. Drum helped to solve many problems for the ever growing city of Tacoma, including sewage disposal, and transportation! Henry Drum resided in the home with his wife and 5 children, for an uncertain amount of time. The former Mayor died on March 20, 1950 at the age of 92.

It is easy to see why people feel a certain level of importance when they enter Carpe Diem Massage- which is located in the garden level of the Henry Drum House. We feel that the "Rabbit Hole" begins at the top of our outside stairs, leading down into the entrance. It has beautiful rock walls, blooming with wild flowers in the spring. That first step is like stepping away from the hustle and bustle of the busy St. Helen's ave, into a world of our own. Many clients have a bit of trouble locating us for their first visit, and in return are often shocked that a place like exists somewhere they have unknowingly passed several times! It is a best kept secret of Tacoma, and it is our own little rabbit hole.

Upon entering the Carpe Diem door, you will immediately notice unique one of a kind furniture, and antiques, representing the era that was the Henry Drum house in it's original days. You will see some modern twists representing the world today, and most importantly you will feel warm and invited. Each massage room has its own identity- look- and feel associated with them. The largest room- called the "Red Room" among the staff gets its elegant feel from the deep burgundy walls, candles, white chiffon curtains, fire place, and rod iron accents. This room is most commonly used for our couples massage sessions. The next room is known as the "Elemental Room" this room features beautiful turquoise blue walls, a tranquil fountain, wood stick strategically tied together, a vintage golden mirror, candles, and even a fire place. One of the walls is original granite, from when the house was originally built. Each of earths elements are represented in this room for a very calming feel. The Elemental room is most often used for pregnancy massage, because of it's nurturing feel. Our final room is simply called the "Little Room", but don't let the name fool you. It may be smaller, but it is full of old historic charm with original granite walls, and candles.

We hope now you have a new found outlook on the space that is Carpe Diem. We are so grateful to be located in a space that is rich with a history of its own. Thank you for joining us on our journey- down the rabbit hole.

I thought I would share what massage means to me personally as a therapist. How powerful and profound it is in my own life. How Carpe Diem Massage the place I have worked so hard to create is so special to me and how much I receive during each massage session.

Life is stressful and hectic. I personally worry to much and I am constantly in my head thinking and overthinking. In the process driving the closest ones to me crazy... My mind never shuts off with the worries of daily life. I often feel overwhelmed by my constant thinking. But....

Things begin to shift for me as I walk down the stone steps leading into my world. I feel calmer and more at peace. When I walk into my massage room my heart rate slows, I feel myself taking a few deep breaths as I center myself for this scared space. I created Carpe Diem to be the space I want to be in. My massage room is the one place I do not overthink in fact its the only place I do not think at all. I just feel and intuitively work the muscles as I approach them. People often ask "how did you find that?" and honestly I don't know. My hands work their magic and my mind is free to escape. I truly go into a mediative trance of sorts. I reach a level of calm that I have not found anywhere else and I have searched for it. The massage room is my domain, the one place in the world that I never second guess myself. I own that room. It is where I belong and it's where I want to be. I feel the most myself there, peaceful and confidant, I become the person I would like to be all the time. I get a peek into my true self and I like what I see.

Another plus while I am massaging, I am disconnected. Meaning no social media, no text messages, no cell phone buzzing at me. No negative news. I am free to just be. We are so overstimulated these days it is amazing to be disconnected for a bit. I call this living in my "massage bubble" and it's amazing. The real world can wait.

I love and respect every person who walks into our space. There is a special place in my heart for every client that has every been on my table. The connection I feel with each and every one is very real. Massage is my art form, as an ex dancer my massage is rhythmic and it flows and it a beautiful thing. It is a pure pleasure for me to give, my hands flow, my mind lets go, the client relaxes our breathing slows together as their muscles relax and let go. Feeling the power of postive touch changing someones body is amazing experience. And seeing the peaceful look on their faces as they re enter the world brings me bliss and joy.

I can honestly say after massaging 17 plus years, I still love it. I have had the honor of having such loyal clients, most have been with me well over a decade and a couple of them have been with me all 17 years. I have seen their lives grow and change, from being single to married to becoming a prenatal client to prenatal clients who's children who now drive. I had 2 clients that I had seen at the end of their lives. Both whom I had seen regularly for 10+ years. I truly miss you Annette and Bev, I think of you both often and I will never forget you. I have been with clients in times of joy and in times of pain and deep sorrow. As a therapist I am blessed to share a real part of peoples lives. These lovely people, my clients, I consider my family have given me so much to me over the years. Some of them have been there when my own life was the hardest and also at its best. The connections are real and true and I cherish them.

If you have every been on my table I THANK YOU, I hope you have received as much as I have.

Bonjour February! We are a month into the year 2017- and it is now the time of year that many people start to think about Valentines day. Thinking about this myself, I was walking to grab a quick coffee between clients, I realized that the Stadium District literally has any thing you could possibly want and need to make your day special- and hassle free. Inside this quaint little pocket in Tacoma, we have a gem of hidden treasures. There are literally bunch of amazing small businesses that are truly unique, and can keep you away from the chaotic shopping malls and over populated drug stores in the Cupid frenzy that is February.

I was walking toward the Northern Slope Coffee shop (an adorable locally owned coffee shop located inside the Stadium Thriftway entrance) and the first place that caught my eye was Labella Nail Salon. I have been here a few times for my nails with my mother, and I even went there to get my nails done before my wedding. It has been an amazing experience every single time. All the employees are very kind and very welcoming. They offer many services- and most importantly, they genuinely make you feel like they are happy you are there. What a perfect place to get pampered before you valentines festivities. Heck- even if you have no plans it is always a good thing to pamper yourself! A little self care goes a long way. Check out Labella nail Salon for a truly unique pampering experience, You deserve it. Labella Nail Salon

The next place that ALWAYS catches my eye in the Stadium District is Ranko’s Drugstore. We all know it by its eye catching building or orange and blue. It is family owned and has been open since 1920! Talk about commitment. I love shopping there for the unique and fun gifts that they always have in stock. They have something there for anyone and everyone. You can find romantic, or goofy gifts for your loved one, or something just for yourself! From Seahawks gear (Go hawks!), to candies, to cards, and gag gifts- Ranko’s has you covered. You will be in and out, and on your way in no time- and you can feel good about supporting an amazing family owned business that is a part of Tacoma’s history.Ranko's Drugstore

Across the street from Ranko’s you will find Tease Chocolates. Oh my goodness, let me tell you- these chocolates are the real deal. They hand make their chocolates goodies, including bars, truffles, caramels, smores, toffee’s and more! They even have vegan, dairy free, and sugar substitute options available! All of their ingredients of are the highest quality. They have an amazing inventory that will have something for everyone! Be sure not to overlook Tease Chocolates for your chocolate needs- you will regret it! Tease Chocolates

Back at Carpe Diem Massage we are providing more and more couples massages. This is a great way to connect and relax with your partner while reaping so many benefits from the massage itself. A couples massage is when two massage tables are set up in the same room, and both partners are massaged at the same time, by two separate therapists. This creates the opportunity to bond and relax together, while allowing each body to receive the individual focus that it needs. Massage is known to reduce stress, and muscle tension, while improving circulation and reducing muscle pain and soreness. Couples massage should be a part of any couples routines who strive to maintain healthy lifestyles. Valentines day weekend we will be scheduling ONLY couples massage! What a perfect time to try it out and unwind together. We are featuring a SIP and SOAK add on Valentines weekend and day only, it includes your choice of champagne or wine and strawberries while you get a foot soak and sugar scrub. This is an amazing way to unwind with your partner before your massage! Call and ask to add on a "Sip and Soak" to your valentines couples massage!

Yes, I said it. Can you believe that? Another year has come and gone in the blink of an eye. This is the time we will hear all of our friends and family talk about their new year resolution's, and on the other side of the spectrum plenty of people will be "anti-resolutions." Ironic isn't it? No matter where you stand on the new years hype- At Carpe Diem Massage we truly believe that any transformation begins with the inside- and radiates out, no matter what time of year it is.

It's not surprising that massage therapy is soothing and relaxing, but did you know that it is also known to improve your mental wellness? Without proper mental wellness it is difficult to fully enjoy anything in life to the fullest. According to several therapists, and clients alike- they believe that massage therapy is an effective tool for treating anxiety, depression, and even insomnia because it brings you to a complete relaxed state. This is great news! Massage therapy improves both physical and mental health, all while you get to relax and have some time just for you. Sounds like a good New years resolution to me, massage + self care = better mental and physical health!

Christy Seizing the day in Hawaii

Whats another way in which massage can transform you inside and out? Adding in yoga. Just like massage, yoga is highly praised for it's top three important benefits.

1. Improving flexibility. Massage and yoga together will help your body become more flexible, creating a greater range of motion, and more limber joints. This will make everyday tasks easier, as well as straightening your posture and evening out your breathing.

2.Increasing Circulation. Massage and yoga keep blood moving through your body, which in turn makes room for more oxygen rich blood. This can also result in lower blood pressure- which greatly improves your health and wellness overall.

3. Stress Relief. We all know that stress is apart of everyday life, and it's unavoidable- but it can take a tremendous toll on your health. Yoga and massage will both promote the kind of relaxation that will result in a deeper sleep. Better physical and mental performance, and higher energy levels will follow. All of these tools with help you combat the stress in your life, in a healthy manner.

Photo: Taylor Stephens

That being said- if you are finding this blog in the new year, or in 5 years from now, the facts still remain the same. All change starts from within yourself. Nurturing yourself, your soul, and your body, will create a breeding ground for positive change. I urge you to not forget about your mental state. The more mentally balanced you are, the better you will be at conquering your goals,

Stay Balanced my friend. Let us make this an incredible year.

Carpe Diem Massage is growing and expanding in ways that were never imagined, all by the woman who started it all- Christy Barnes. But how did Carpe Diem get it’s start? How did it become more than an idea and dream and turn into reality? Let’s dig a little deeper into the history of Carpe Diem Massage.

Christy Barnes graduated from Ashmead Collage with honors in 2000 and went straight to opening her first massage space. At the time she had three young children, each with their own schedules and agendas, and it was very important that she was able to be flexible to work around her kids. Opening up shop for herself seemed like the only logical solution to Christy. And so it began.

After Christy graduated her first location was in downtown Tacoma, inside the Old City Hall Building, where she began by renting a room from another therapist. Her business was not yet called Carpe Diem, but instead it was simply “Christy Corns LMP.” It was a simple start, a small room with horrible wallpaper that proved to be a pain when painting, but it was all she needed to gain momentum. Not long after being in that location Christy moved to her own little studio in Tacoma’s Proctor district, in a cute little room above the Pacific Northwest Shop, during the Halloween of 2000. She was a solo therapist during this time, and decided to call this location “Carpe Diem Massage Studio.”

The idea of the name “Carpe Diem” came about when Christy was in massage school. They watched the “Dead Poet’s Society” starring Robin Williams. It was during this film she first heard the phrase “Carpe Diem” meaning “Seize the Day” and it resonated with her ever since. From then on Christy let that phrase impact her thought process and decision making. She didn’t want to take anything for granted, or let any moment go to waste. That is what “Carpe Diem” means to her and the business as a whole.

Now- Back to Carpe Diem Massage Studio. Christy stayed in that space until 2005, and she felt she was outgrowing it. She wanted to make more of an impact, and be able to offer a variety of services. That leads us to Carpe Diem The Cottage. It was a 4 bedroom house in the proctor district, across the street from Mason Middle School. Since it was such a large space, several therapists had come and gone, renting a space in the cottage. Each left their own mark in developing the business as it is today. Christy Eventually began to look for a space that fit her own personal vibe, and she struck gold in the Stadium District!

In May of 2008, Christy moved to the space we all know and love as “Carpe Diem Massage” Located in the Henry Drum House, in the adorable Stadium Distract. The Henry Drum house was built for the first mayor of Tacoma- Henry Drum. Since the move Christy has switched from leasing rooms to hiring employees, including several massage therapists and a few front desk staff as well. Her Daughter Sarah is now managing as well. Christy has been able to maintain a steady following of clientelle, and most of her clients have been with her for well over a decade.

Now that we have the history of Carpe Diem, let’s check out some of the amazing accomplishments of Carpe Diem in the more recent years. They are very proud to have won “Best Massage” In the South Sound magazine in both 2015 and 2016, and are currently in the running for 2017! (Vote for her here! http://vote.southsoundmag.com/ Community is very important to the Carpe Diem Massage team. They sponsor a local roller derby team, Femme Fianna- which is part of the Dockyard Derby Dames.(Check them out! http://www.dockyardderbydames.com/) Carpe Diem has donated their time massaging in the “Unleashed in the Bowl” a local event to support kindered souls and no kill Dog shelter. http://unleashedatstadiumbowl.org/ Carpe Diem is supporting Tacoma City Ballets Nutcracker this season –http://www.tacomacityballet.com/ a beautiful ballet that both Christy and Sarah used to be apart of Christy has also worked with local counselors to help heal women who have suffered from domestic violence and sexual abuse. She is an active board member or the Stadium Historical District Business association.http://www.stadiumdistrict.com/. In addition the her massage talents, Christy is a licensed Doula and has helped laboring women bring many beautiful babies into this world.

Christy and her team (Including husband and co-owner Richard Barnes) are always looking for opportunities to change lives through the healing power of touch. The future of Carpe Diem Massage looks very bright and seems to be ever growing and expanding. We look forward to see what is in store next!
